>> good morning, everyone. happy is the day. thanks for being with us. i'm katie marzullo. let's start with a quick first look at the weather. i don't have to tell you will it's cold out there. good morning. >> yes, the cold front brought in an inch of rain. you can see some mixed precip just to the west of you. the moisture has moved out of the central coast. a little light rain but here's what's left of the front. we have once again very cold conditions, but most of the moisture is out of the area. we still have the possibility of some high-elevation snow around the santa cruz mountains. 30 and 40s right now. hid 30s by noontime.

not getting warmer than that, upper 30s to 40. and one more opportunity for rain for the week ahead. i'll show that to go coming up. >> thank you. and sticking with the cold area, the frigid temperatures have been more than just uncomfortable. they have actual le turned deadly. in the south bay four people have died from hypothermia in the past few days. nick smith has more on this story. >> i've been homeless for almost a year now. >> he's one of the men we met at this san jose shelter. without a home to call his open, the cold snap blanketing the south bay has forced him and others to look for a warm place to city. >> knowing there was a warm place to go and you call and have nowhere else to go and in this is the right place to go. when you are town and out, you are cold, this place will help you out. >> others haven't been as fortunate. four men, each in their lit 40s or 50s, have been found

dead in different parts of the county. >> we want to try to get folks who don't have a home into shelter, particularly this weekend when its it's cold. >> temperatures fell below 30 degrees rue and are expected to sink lower. so officials with santa clara county homeless program have placed an addition million 375 beds in area shelters. but they say that still won't be enough. >> it should never happen in this community. we should never have the heart brick of this kind of loss. it's not necessary. it should never happen. >> nick smith, abc7 news. the north by now where the higher elevations of napa valley got hit. caltran plows were on standby in kiss more snow fell. we have more from example soggia. >> by 8:30 -- from >> caltran culled out the plows

shut down due to snow and traffic collisions. this picture, also from caltran, just west of willits on highway 20. in the sierra, chase are required at 3200 feet on highway i-80 and there is a storm in the lake tahoe region. elevations above. the four winds growers have the most damage. they wereins lited in a protection covering but the cold still got to them. part of your plans like orange trees were not affected. this morning much of the u.s. is covered in ice and snow, especially in the south and midwest as the wintry blast heads east. four people have been killed on u.s. roads since the storm hit thursday. a windchill advisory is in effect for parts of northeast arkansas. forecasters say windchill

readings between 0 and minus 5 degrees my occur today. virginia officials warn residents of a major ice storm likely to take shape tomorrow. more than 2100 flights were cancelled nationwide. sfo cancelled about 13 arriving and 17 departing flights. we've been receiving photos of the cold snap. we have this picture of snow in ukiah in mendocino county. you can e-mail us your pictures. we have news out of san jose where police are investigating a middle accident. it happened on moore park avenue where a car slammed into a tree. the car was speeding and it was raining. one man was killed. no word on whether or not alcohol was a factor. the express way was closed while crews investigated but it's

since reopened. in castro valley, east bay officials are assessing damage to homes after a water main break. it broke near the corner of 7 hills drive and avenue. they were able to shut down the flow of water by 10:00 but still several houses were flooded. >> i had wet gushing from my neighbors behind me down the street. it's other mess. the break also caused a 10 by 15 sinkhole that trapped a fire truck. look at that. the fire truck was sent out this morning. we have no word on what caused the water main to break. developing news this morning. the palo alto veteran held captive in north korea is on his way home. merrill newman was taken off the plane and held for more than a month. last night he was departed from korea. we have the latest. >> merrill newman is on his way home from north korea after

but you w to keep track of it always. live doppler 7hd, you want to get the abc7 weather app. so helpful it will tell you exactly what is going on. go to abc7news.com/app and you will find it there. lisa will be along in a little bit with news of the cold front. the search for a missing bay area pilot and his family has been scaled back in idaho. an executive dale smith and four family members disappeared while flying from oregon to montana last weekend. bad weather forced them to call off the air search for the family. officials say they cannot put people in harm's which. san francisco authorities have arrested a man they think is responsible for throwing two cats into the bay. 33-year-old mr. patterson was arrested yesterday afternoon after people tipped off police to his whereabouts. he resisted arrest. he was taken to the general hospital for a psychiatric e."

a woman was considering her two cats in a carrier when he sudden by grabbed the carrier and through it into the bay. both cats died. police say patterson has a history of assaults. the morning continues in south africa for nelson mandela while details of his funeral are released. people are dancing in front of his house to honor him. tomorrow is a day of prayer in south africa. mandela will be buried a week from sub. by area loaders are remembering nelson mandela. one is seen here visiting him in 1990. williams was arrested in an anti-aparti rally in may of 1985. nelson said that movement helped quicken the end of white minority rule. >> he is in jail and yet he comes out of jail and he stands tall and says i am not going to

director patricia wilson can raise the amount today when she takes a plunge in the san francisco bay at the fundraiser. abc7 news ama daetz is hosting the park at the aquatic part at 8 carolyn tyler30 a.m.. i almost can't think of anything worse. great cause but i can barely stand the temperatures being on land. >> i know. other the water temperature warmer than the air temperature now in the city. rain highs in the 4s around the by today. that's going to stick around. we have a freeze warning in effect for tomorrow morning and sunday morning as the cold front rapidly moved through last night. you probably heard the rain and the wind. and we are looking at a breezy day today underneath a lot of sunshine. but here's a look at the rain. you can see just off the coast of monterey, and most of the activity now pressing way south. we will look for still the snow to be going in the sierra nevada. here is a look at the mountains

right now with a winter storm warning in effect until 10:00 this morning. still the possibility into the next hour or so for some moisture over mount hamilton. we will look for the patchy fog up in santa rosa this morning. a cold morning. and the freeze warning in effect for tomorrow and sunday morning. but look how much milder we are this morning. no thomas, just low 40s up in santa rosa. 11 degrees warmer in san carlos and 14 degrees warmer up in livermore -- over in livermore, i should say. with all those 30s and mid-40s around, we've got this area of low pressure that continues to sink to the south and still temperatures very, very cool for this time of year. in fact, it's going to take until next week that we see the numbers recover in the upper 50s to near 60. but here's the plan then for the rest of the day. you will notice that throughout the day we do have the possibility in the higher elevations, the green representing some of the rain. but overall we are mostly sunny

here and temperatures barely at 50 degrees today. so we will look for the activity to head on into the sierra nevada with this winter storm warning until 10:00. eight to twelve inches on the east shore, and one to two feet above 7,000 feet. wind, well, at the lower levels, lick level, we are talking anywhere from 30 to 40 miles an hour and upper elevations 80 mile-an-hour wind gusts. if you are thinking of heading up there, you may want toi it toward the later afternoon hours. we are looking for this to wind down rather quickly, but right now the activity is certainly moving on into the mountains. right now as for the moisture, plenty of it to the south of us. but we will be left with those breezy northwest winds. up to 20 miles an hour. san francisco 48 degrees today. that's all we can manage with 50 in oakland. mid-40s in morgan hill.

reveal fewer women in the u.s. are having kids. between 2000 and twine pregnancy rates for women fell by 64% or 6.4 pregnancies. it's the lowest rate in twelve years. while rates for under 230 fell, rates for women over 30 increased studly since 19930. women between the ages of 30 and 39 bombing pregnant have jumped 30% since 1990 >> the famous guy far bob dylan played at the famous newport folk festival has sold at auction to have 994 thud. christie said an absentee buyer purchased it yesterday. the festival was a moment that marked his move from acoustics to electric rock and roll. it's been in the possession of a

>> welcome back. thanks for joining us at 5:30 on this saturday morning. we will start off with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. here's a look at the cold front rapidly pushing through the bay area and into the central valley. lots of snow in the sierra nevada. hour advisories have been lifted except for the santa cruz mountains. point reyes, the coastline and monterey a few leftover showers. we will lock for the possibility of leftover showers, higher-elevation mixed snow around mt. hamilton. maybe around lake county. otherwise we are clearing out quickly. temperatures will be cool. breezy winds. right now with fog 33 in santa rosa. it's only 34 mountain view and

san jose but much warmer than we were the last couple mornings. a freeze warning tonight. when the chilly temperatures will head out of town and the extended outlook coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you. we have frigid temperatures, rain, snow. so if you are waving winter, it is here. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with us this morning. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: super cold. i was checking out our abc7 news weather happen. 33 degrees at the top of highway 17. but no snow yet. caltran snowplows, check it out, are standing by here. we are about a quarter mile from the restaurant at the santa cruz summit on highway 17. snowplows are standing by just in indicates they are needed. no snow up here yet. there is a warning to anybody traveling on highway 17 this morning. check it out with the freeing

signs. because there's a lot of water on the road and that water may turn to ice. conditions up here are definitely sketchy and could be fairly dangerous. we are told there is snow at higher elevations on some remote mountain peaks here in the santa cruz mountains. but if you are traveling up here this morning, again, lisa argen said there is a weather -- winter weather advisory in effect for the santa cruz mountains for at least the next 30 minutes. hopefully you are at home and you are warm at home watching abc7 news this morning and not traveling. but if you are, be careful out there because the conditions could change at any moment. again, snowplows out here waiting for any snow to fall. so far it looks like conditions will remain dry. but we are keeping an eye on it. live in the santa cruz mountains, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> i like your advice to stay home if you can. thank you. we will check back in with you a

little later. we've been receiving photos of the cold snap from the viewers. kevin sent us this picture yesterday after snowfall in willits in mendocino county. look at that. you can e-mail your pictures to ureport at kgo-tv.com. there will be a lighting of the beacon ceremony. the newly refurbished beacon has shut off after the pearl harbor attack to make sure it isn't targeted. it is list once a year to honor pearl harbor victims.e% it's been moved from the location of the summit at mt. diablo due to weather and it will be held in concord instead. in developing news, crews in castro valley this morning are investigating what caused a water main break that flooded several houses t happened just before 7:00 last night in the area of seven hills drive. the rupture of the twelve-inch

rain also caused a rink hole to form and that sinkhole trapped a fire truck. crews were able to shut down the flow of water by 10:00 and the fire truck is now out of the sinkhole. new this morning, president obama is urging congress to extend unemployment benefits that are set to expire at the end of the year. in his weekly address the president says the unemployment benefits may make a difference between hardship and catastrophy for 1.3 million americans. he adds an extension of the benefits will help keep the economy growing. if congress refuses to act, it won't just hurt families already struggling, it will actually harm our economy. unemployment insurance is one of the most effective ways there is to boost our economy. when people have money to spend on basic necessities, that means more customers for our businesses and ultimately more jobs. fighting a report the president says allowing the benefits to expire could cost businesses 240,000 jobs. the california public utilities commission has

announced it's joining the investigation into this week's disabled bart train incident. at least nine people went to the hospital wednesday after the train became stuck in a berkeley hills tunnel. bart says the train stopped after a short caused emergency brakes to activate, creating a smoky dust that made several passengers sick. could the latest diet craze be as simple as taking a walk? more people are tracking their steps to lose weight and many are using technology developed right here in the bay area. here is health and science reporter carolyn johnson. >> reporter: chris walks five miles a day just getting around his game store in downtown oakland were he knows exactly how many steps he takes thanks to a tiny tracker in his pocket called fitbit. >> it changed my life basically. >> it is one of a growing number of wearable electronics that has people wiring up to lose weight weight. >> i went to 2xl to medium and a

scales. >> there is a huge gap between what people think they are doing and what they doing. >> job wear's device is called up. >> it tracks your movement throughout the day passively and sleep at night. in the application you can see what you are doing. >> both apps allow users to set goals and share them with friends on social media. sharon is a nutrition counselor, california pacific medical center in san francisco. she recommends wearable fitness trackers to patients. >> it's trackable. before it was i think i did this, maybe i'll do that, but if you have something that's trackable and traceable, i think that one of the reaps why people can do so much better with those things. chris says he can't stop telling people about how tracking his steps i am proved his health. >> fantastic experience. i recommended it to a ton of friends who are also seeing results. >> carolyn johnson, abc7 news. both the fit bit flex and job own up cost just under $130.
